 Highway or Skyway

When most of us think of the inventions of the future, the first things that come to mind are flying cars.

Flying into the future

Terrafugia, Inc. is a company that hopes to bring the future to us a little bit faster. The company is designing a fully functional flying car called the Transition that can be driven on highways and landed in airports. It has fold-up wings, a low center of gravity, and a rear-mounted propeller. Although its use is intended for licensed pilots, it marks a huge step toward the availability of alternative air travel.

Escaping gridlock

When the idea for Terrafugia was hatched, the company founders looked at statistics that show that it’s taking longer to travel from place to place in America due to traffic congestion and a slow commercial airline system. By putting flight in the hands of individuals, travel enters a whole new world. The company’s name, Terrafugia, is derived from Latin and literally means “escape from the earth.” Flying cars with foldup wings could be the best escape invention of the century!

If everything goes according to Terrafugia’s plans, carros voladores could be filling the air by the end of next year. Maybe the future really is here! Could flying buses be next?
