An Influencer Opens Up: The Dark Side of Instagram Modeling

Being in the modeling and acting world can be tough. As an advocate for body positivity, I quickly found myself becoming a sensation in the modeling world thanks to my positive attitude and confidence on social media -- but it wasn’t always easy.

My first photoshoot was actually in Connecticut. It was my first time working with a real photographer, and he was amazing! After that, my social media started blowing up thanks to his photos. I always encourage my fans and followers to always strive for self-improvement and be proud of who they are. But I also always warn them that they need to be wary and have thick skin.

The not-so-pretty

There’s a dark side to any industry. And particularly, when you open yourself up to speculation on the internet, you can see people's dark side. The internet has allowed influencers worldwide to express themselves independently and openly, but it has also been used as a platform for hate. More often than not, trolls can hide behind the anonymity of their computer or phone screens and spread hate with comments or messages that are offensive, hurtful, and sometimes even threatening.

Trolls tend to hide behind a screen and use it to spread hate to others. Most influencers have had their fair share of hate comments or been sent rude messages. Wannabe influencers should be prepared to withstand the inevitable criticism they will face in pursuing fame and fortune.

I also always emphasize the value of patience in the face of the avalanche of fake pages that might come from photos and videos being utilized without permission. It's become increasingly common for people to take advantage of influencers’ photos to their advantage--from creating fake pictures, or memes, to running scams. People often post stolen images of influencers on social media, as well as in other forms of advertisements, without permission.

What I’ve witnessed

I’ve seen so many fake pages using my photos and videos to try and scam people, and it creates a bad image for me even when I’m not the one creating that page. It also creates an issue having to track down all your stolen, copyrighted content.

The key is to have “social awareness” for those receiving fake messages or viewing fake content, stay mindful of the tactics used, and always double-check the authenticity of any posts involving an influencer before engaging. And for influencers the key is to stand up for yourself!

If someone treats your badly, don’t let them walk all over you because you think it will help you get further in the industry. Don’t keep your mouth shut. Stand up and be true to yourself!
