Internship Must Haves

You’ll need some snazzy accessories, of course, to go with your brand new job.

I always knew I wanted my professional life to involve writing. But I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was.

That’s where internships come into play. They can help you figure out exactly what you want to do, whether you’re in high school, college, or the workforce. Internships can expose you to various career options as you explore what role is the ideal fit for you.

Indeed, learning in the classroom is important. But you can apply what you learned in a real setting at an internship. Then you’ll be prepared for anything that comes your way once you start your career.

When it comes to getting a job, it’s often about who you know. Internships allow you to meet professionals within your industry. Pick their brain about how they got to where they are, and about the ins-and outs- of the industry. You may even find a mentor who can guide you in your professional life. Connect with fellow interns and talk about their career aspirations. Bounce your hopes, dreams, and fears off them. When you’re ready to launch your career, you can reach out to these people about opportunities.

Internships also expose you to the social aspect of offices. Learn about workplace dynamics and office politics. Eat lunch with colleagues and see what happens outside the office. Watch how employees maintain a work-life balance.

For me, I tried a little bit of everything in the journalism field to nail down where I wanted to be. I spent a summer chasing down stories for a local paper. I learned about public relations at a nonprofit agency. I watched a college alumni magazine go to press. All these experiences exposed me to the people and practices that have shaped my career today.

You’ll need a few things to help you on your internship journey. These items can help you get through your days in the working world.
