Thrifting Tips for Teens

Thrifting is a great way to update your wardrobe for a fraction of the price. And it’s more fun than going to the mall! Thrifting is cheaper, more interesting, and better for the environment than shopping retail. Here are some tips to keep in mind for the next time you decide to visit your local second-hand store.

Find things you can alter (crop, cut, sew, or add fringe to)  This isn’t limited to clothing either, take a look at scarves, fabrics, costumes, etc. Many items can be reworked and created into something even cooler. Also, bigger items can be cut down to size.

Find out when your local thrift store gets new deliveries/ restocks. Ask a salesclerk when the store brings in new items. This will keep thrifting fresh and interesting and raises the chances that you will find good stuff.

Don’t just stick to the sizes on the rack. Not all clothing sizes are the same across different brands, and sizes vary across different time periods. A tag might say medium but could fit like a small. Also, sizes often get misplaced — the XXL section might have the perfect medium-sized item for you.

Don’t be afraid to check the children’s section. The kids’ section can have great finds, especially if you like cropped clothing, or more colorful items. Adult sized cut-off tops and tank tops often get accidentally placed in children's sections.

Look for classics you can elevate. A leather bag, white tee, blue jeans, and other basics are great. Items that go with everything can be helpful on a morning when you can't find anything to wear.

Stay away from fast fashion brands at the thrifts. Try to stay items will be out-of-trend in no time and are likely to just end up back at the thrift store. Also, they often sell for much more than they are worth, sometimes listing for more than retail price.

Typically avoid the “star attractions” section. While useful, it usually has slightly on-trend items that have been marked up in price because of the brand or the item's popularity.

Lastly, be conscious of people who can only shop second hand. Make sure to take only what you like, and don’t buy clothes you will end up disposing of or not using.
