Standout Student

Say Hello to Singer and Songwriter, Victoria Heigel.

The full-time student talks to American Teen about fame, fashion, and finding the balance between college and her career.

Tell me about the first song you ever wrote.

I was young—only 7 years old! The song was called Flowers, and was about throwing flowers on the floor from your ex because you’re so upset. Very dramatic, I know, but I was completely inspired by Taylor Swift and started writing music about a dramatic love story I created in my head.

What happened from there?

A couple of years later, I presented a collection of music to a group of friends in elementary school where I grew up in Louisville, asking to hear some of their own songs—I thought every kid wrote music. Going forward, though, I realized that my love of songwriting was something that made me unique.

Fast forward to today. What are you up to now?

Currently, I’m studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I actually just transferred here this past fall because I knew I needed an environment that was 100% rooted in creating well-rounded musicians—my first single, “Put It Into Words,” just came out this past December.

So great! And are you happy with your new school?

It’s amazing because I’m constantly inspired and motivated by the other students. Plus,  I am majoring in music production so that I will be able to not only write and sing my music, but also produce it myself.

PHOTO VICTORIAHow are you managing to get your schoolwork done and keep your singing career strong?

Balancing between the two can be hard sometimes because I constantly find myself not leaving as much time as I would like to write. I find that when I am caught up in projects and school work, I find it harder to write and be creative. But keeping my apartment clean, eating healthy, and writing everything in a planner every week really helps me keep a focused mindset. I balance my school work with my singing career better when I have the rest of my life somewhat organized.

Do you have plans to drop any more music soon?

Yes! At the beginning of June I’m releasing a five song EP!

So exciting! If you ever find a few minutes to yourself, what do you like to do most?

In my free time you’ll probably find me shopping—I’m a shoe/fashion addict—or walking around the city. I don’t like to stay indoors when the sun is out.

Do you have any advice for teens who want to launch their own singing or songwriting careers?

Never quit because you’re afraid of failure and never compare yourself to someone else. The beauty of being an artist is being unique. Also, talent can only go so far. Hard work and dedication always trump talent.

What's something your fans don't know about you...yet?

I am planning to compete in Miss Massachusetts USA later this year.
