  • Bathroom Battles

Back in the old days, bathrooms were hardly a subject even worth discussing. There was the Girls bathroom and the Boys bathroom. Most folks never gave this approach a second thought but today, that two option system no longer works for every student. Many young people today do not identify as ‘boy’ or ‘girl’. Instead, there are new ways to define gender that are not locked into the traditional split of male or female.

For these students, using the bathroom can be a scary experience, so schools across the nation have been grappling with how to deal with this problem. So far, the solutions are both interesting and numerous, but before we look at those solutions, let’s take a little trip back in time and see where this current situation began.

  • Locker Wars: Battle to Store Belongings Heats Up

Lockers have been an essential part of the school experience for decades. For many of us, getting our locker combination was our first exposure to middle school along with choosing your own classes and sadly losing recess. For months, beginner locker users will struggle to open the dang thing; only to have it mastered by winter break by which time most students can open their locker blindfolded. Yet many of these traditional locker experiences have petered out in recent years: Covid, school shootings (huge sigh), and a trend away from textbooks have altered the locker landscape. To get a read on the current situation with school and lockers, American Teen did some research and chatted with some students and teachers to see how they feel about this somewhat antiquated storage system.

Since the beginning of time the path to higher education has been a pretty standard route. You start in elementary school, go to middle and high school, fill out a bunch of applications senior year, graduate from high school, and finally go off to college.

  • Keep Your Vision, but Let Go of Your Expectations

Setting proper expectations for entering the job market post-graduation.

    By Marissa Mitchell

While you’re wrapping up your high school years and preparing for your next step, people begin to warn you about how hard the “real world” is. However, without proper explanation, that warning can be rather mystifying. If you’re anything like me, you might even dismiss the warnings, because you believe you have it all figured out. Well, two things are true. First, the warnings are warranted. Second, you do have it all figured out. But sometimes, that is the very problem. Sometimes, we are so well-planned and expectant, that we can trip over ourselves. Sometimes, we get in our own way.

What to Do If You Don’t Get into Your First-Choice Sorority

Greek life is an incredible way to get involved, meet people, and build lifelong friendships at your university. At both big and small universities, joining a sorority can make campus just a bit smaller and a little more filled with familiar faces. But rushing can be admittedly stressful, especially when you have your heart set on one particular sorority. The matter of fact is that not getting into your first-choice sorority is not the end of the world.

Standout Teen: Residential Advisor Jeff Erickson

    Interview by Katya Lien

Free or reduced living? A meal plan? Your own room? Essentially being a camp counselor for a bunch of 18-year-olds? Yep, that’s basically the short story of being a Residential Advisor (RA) at a University. RAs bear a lot of responsibility, from dishing out pep talks to mediating conflict. But if you’re hard working, caring, and okay with the notion of giving relationship advice to a crying Freshman knocking on your door at 1am on a Tuesday, being an RA could be the perfect option for you.

Jeff Erickson is an RA at the University of Colorado and spoke with American Teen about the RA experience.

    Making Dreams Come True

    By Christina Bradshaw

Kylee McGrane had always loved princesses, fairytales, and community service. So when she was a 20-year-old sophomore at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York, she came up with a totally brilliant idea: She dressed up as her favorite Disney character, Elsa, and visited sick kids at the local hospital. Of course, the patients loved it! That one visit inspired many more. With help from her college roommate Maggie McAndrews, in 2014 Kylee launched a nonprofit called A Moment of Magi, a “dressing up” charity with chapters at colleges across the country. Their volunteers have made thousands of kids smile.

We spoke to Kylee about her magical journey.

  • Why You Should Study Abroad

sweden 2College is about learning. But I don’t think it’s a stretch to say thatabout as much learning happens outside of the class room as inside theclassroom. In addition to the knowledge I’ve gained from lectures and seminars, my college experience has taught me about navigating stress, trusting myself, and building my own community. And I’m learning aton of those lessons right now, in the most fun way I can imagine – by studying abroad.

I’m a U.S. college student, and this semester, I’m studying in Uppsala, Sweden and I couldn’t have made a better decision.

    Here’s why:
