We asked Annie Draddy and Michelle Hall of the New York-based organization company Henry & Higby how to make a dorm room feel comfortable and neat.

College living can be tough. Oftentimes, you're dealing with a really small space--and sometimes you have to share it with one, or more, people!

What's your advice for dealing with limited square footage?

In small dorm rooms where you likely can’t drill into the walls, we recommend raising your bed as much as possible so that you can really utilize the space underneath for storage, or even for your desk.

Use Command Hooks or picture ledges to help get items off of the limited surfaces that you have available to you. You can buy those online or at Target. Add hooks to your closet doors for bags, hats, or even jackets. Picture ledges are great for keeping surfaces clear by giving you a space to put water bottles, beauty products, or whatever other small items you need access to regularly.

Every piece of furniture in the room should have a storage component to it. Consider a nightstand piece that has a large enough top to hold your laptop and a lamp, and then has drawers below for clothing. (We like the elfa system from The Container Store to maximize small spaces.)

Residents usually only live in a dorm for less than a year. What are your tips for decorating a short-term space? 

Removable Wallpaper: Temporary wallpaper will warm up your space and make it more personal. It's pretty easy to apply and also easy to remove, which makes it good for dorms and rentals.

Throw Pillows: Colorful throw pillows are one of the easiest ways to decorate a space and there are tons of affordable options now at stores like Target and HomeGoods so they don’t come with a huge financial investment.
