While you’re wrapping up your high school years and preparing for your next step, people begin to warn you about how hard the “real world” is. However, without proper explanation, that warning can be rather mystifying. If you’re anything like me, you might even dismiss the warnings, because you believe you have it all figured out. Well, two things are true. First, the warnings are warranted. Second, you do have it all figured out. But sometimes, that is the very problem. Sometimes, we are so well-planned and expectant, that we can trip over ourselves. Sometimes, we get in our own way.

What to Do If You Don’t Get into Your First-Choice Sorority

Greek life is an incredible way to get involved, meet people, and build lifelong friendships at your university. At both big and small universities, joining a sorority can make campus just a bit smaller and a little more filled with familiar faces. But rushing can be admittedly stressful, especially when you have your heart set on one particular sorority. The matter of fact is that not getting into your first-choice sorority is not the end of the world.

Modern Majors

Today, you’ll find some college majors in fields you never imagined.

Rapidly changing job markets in the 21st Century have pushed colleges across the nation to update their offerings. No longer satisfied with plain old biology and poli sci majors, students in the new millennium seek courses that both fit their interests and prepare them for highly skilled job market of today.

These courses vary across an awesomely huge spectrum of themes and it is impossible to list them all. But a good rule of thumb today is to match your talents with your major. For example, if performance is your passion then find schools with quality theatre programs. Or, if you are into technology looks for schools that specialize in engineering or computer science.

Making Dreams Come True

Kylee McGrane had always loved princesses, fairytales, and community service. So when she was a 20-year-old sophomore at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York, she came up with a totally brilliant idea: She dressed up as her favorite Disney character, Elsa, and visited sick kids at the local hospital. Of course, the patients loved it! That one visit inspired many more. With help from her college roommate Maggie McAndrews, in 2014 Kylee launched a nonprofit called A Moment of Magi, a “dressing up” charity with chapters at colleges across the country. Their volunteers have made thousands of kids smile.

We spoke to Kylee about her magical journey.

College is about learning. But I don’t think it’s a stretch to say thatabout as much learning happens outside of the class room as inside theclassroom. In addition to the knowledge I’ve gained from lectures and seminars, my college experience has taught me about navigating stress, trusting myself, and building my own community. And I’m learning aton of those lessons right now, in the most fun way I can imagine – by studying abroad.

I’m a U.S. college student, and this semester, I’m studying in Uppsala, Sweden and I couldn’t have made a better decision.
